Sign Up Now for Free School Lunch and Breakfast Programs

Do not send your kids to school without breakfast or lunch.   A hungry child cannot learn.   Ask their schools if your kids qualify for the national free breakfast and lunch program, or for the free milk and after-school snacks program.

Most public and private schools in Wisconsin offer the programs.   They are paid by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA).

Programs are based on family income

All students can participate in these meal programs based on their family income.

Families who get FoodShare, W-2 cash benefits, or benefits under the food program on Indian Reservations are among those who may receive meals for their children.

Parents can apply for the programs at any time during the school year. There is an easy application to complete. Ask your child's school for the form.   People at the school can help you fill out the application, if you need help.   The information is kept private.

Ask about milk and snacks programs

Schools that do not offer the School Lunch or School Breakfast programs may offer milk to students through the Special Milk Program and Snacks in After-School Care programs.   The snacks meet national standards for healthy diets.

“School breakfast and lunch can make a huge difference in the lives of all children, and especially lower-income children,” said State School Superintendent Elizabeth Burmaster.   She encourages families and schools to use the service.

More than 66 percent of all children in Milwaukee Public Schools alone receive free breakfast and lunch.
