Bad Season May Help Green Bay Next Year

The Green Bay Packers are one of football’s worst teams. That is the bad news.  What is the good news?  The worst teams get the best picks in the 2006 NFL Draft. The draft gives teams a chance to hire the best players out of college sports.

Green Bay started the season 3-10. Only a few teams are worse. The worst team at the end of the season gets the number one draft choice. The second-worst team gets the second pick, and so on. Green Bay is close to getting a pick in the top five.

The best players go early in the draft. This year, the top pick will likely be Reggie Bush. The University of Southern California running back won the Heisman Trophy award. The Heisman is given to the best player in college football.

Bush could be an NFL star, too

Bush’s teammate, quarterback Matt Leinart, will likely be the second pick. University of Texas quarterback Vince Young might be third. Young, however, is only a college junior. He may decide to play another year in college and not enter the draft.

A quick turnaround is possible

A top draft pick can turn a losing team into a winner quickly. The Packers must also sign the right free agents this offseason to become a winner again.

“I know it can happen because it has happened with other teams,” Packers quarterback Brett Favre told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. “Turnarounds can be very quick.”

Favre has played poorly at times this season. Many wonder if he will retire following the season. Favre said he has not made up his mind.

His retirement might force the Packers to select Leinart or Young.

Green Bay did draft a quarterback with its 2005 first-round pick: Aaron Rodgers. Some think they made a mistake. Rodgers may never be an NFL starter.

Of course, the season is not over yet. Green Bay could win a few more games. Doing so would probably hurt the Packers more than help.

They would fall in the draft order.
