President Fox to visit Milwaukee
Mexican President Vicente Fox will travel to Milwaukee this summer. He will speak on July 17 at the National Council of La Raza convention. The event will take place at the Midwest Express Center. Close to 15,000 people from throughout the United States will attend. President Bush has also been invited to the convention. Fox is expected to discuss Mexico’s relationship with the United States. The topic is very important to both countries. President Fox and President Bush have met several times since each man was elected to find ways to improve relations between the two countries. The new president of Mexico was elected in July of 2000, just six months before President Bush took office. Other issues that will be discussed at the convention include welfare reform, the 2000 census, and the growth of the Latino population in the Midwest. The Latino population will soon be the largest minority (non-White) population in the U.S. Education reform and Milwaukee’s voucher program are also on the convention agenda. In the school voucher program, parents receive state money to send their children to private or religious schools. President Fox has ties to Wisconsin. In 1956-57, he was a 9th grade high school student at Campion in Prairie du Chien. Campion was a college prep school. It closed in the early 1970s and is now a correctional facility. Prairie du Chien is located in western Wisconsin on the Mississippi River. Source:
