Police arrested a 49-year-old homeless man March 13 and charged him in several thefts that occurred early in the month, including thousands of dollars of items stolen from the Key Biscayne Community Church.

In police reports, Key Biscayne officers said Roberto Gonzalez-Fonseca is seen on surveillance cameras entering numerous rooms at the church and removing computer equipment, a bicycle, a leaf blower, and a Canon camera with a lens. Police estimated the stolen property to be worth $4,950.

Police say they located Gonzalez-Fonseca at Calusa Park wearing the same clothing seen on the video. He “provided a full confession” in which he said that after drinking with a prostitute at Crandon Park beach, he committed several burglaries to get money, police said.

Gonzalez-Fonseca had been released from jail just nine days before his alleged crime spree began in Key Biscayne. Eunice Sigler, a court spokeswoman, said his prior case was referred to TAP, an alternative to incarceration program. He was released from custody March 4, said Miami-Dade Corrections and Rehabilitation Department spokesman Juan Diasgranados.

Police also charged Gonzalez-Fonseca in two other thefts. Police allege he stole $4,000 in power tools from a construction site at 80 W. Mashta Dr. He is also accused in the theft of an unsecured $400 bicycle from a residence at 585 Glenridge Rd. Police said some of the tools were recovered from a hiding spot in a nearby yard. Gonzalez-Fonseca said he did not remember being at the construction site, but did admit to stealing the bicycle, police said.

Court records show Gonzalez-Fonseca was charged with first-degree grand theft, burglary and misdemeanor trespass. He entered a not guilty plea and is set for arraignment April 5. He remained jailed on bond of $45,500, officials said.

People experience homelessness. It should not be a term used to malign or further marginalize. Maybe it would have been more prudent to note that he was just released from detention in the headline. That seems more pertinent than inciting fear of the impoverished.
