Hackers hit government computer systems in the Village of Key Biscayne this week and the Village Council will convene in special session Thursday morning to consult and engage experts, officials said.

Manager Andrea Agha said a criminal investigation is underway.

“We have had a data breach,” Agha said. “Residents can rest assured that we are taking every step necessary.”

Mayor Mike Davey said he had been informed of the breach and that the FBI had been notified.

Agha did not provide details of the breach or what systems had been impacted. Davey said he had no reason to believe that any resident information stored in Village computers had been compromised, but cautioned that the situation is developing.

On Monday, the Village texted residents subscribed to its alert system that email systems were down. A follow-up message said that only Police Department systems were affected.

Police Chief Charles Press said that all police operations are continuing normally, with the exception of email, which remained down as of Wednesday morning. Press said he could not comment about details because of the pending investigation, but said there was no information, either way, about whether records were accessed.

The Council Meeting is set for 8:30 a.m. Thursday.
