Davey to Address the Village in Annual Appraisal

Mayor Mike Davey

As 2019 draws to a close, Mayor of the Village of Key Biscayne Mike Davey plans to do what many do before December ends: look back and reflect on the year that was.

Davey is reinstating the State of the Village address, giving a speech at 7 p.m. Dec. 5 in the Lighthouse Room at the Key Biscayne Community Center. The speech will be an opportunity to revisit successes and difficulties faced by the Mayor and his team in what amounts to approximately his first year in office.

Davey will likely highlight beach water quality as a key challenge for 2019 — one which will no doubt continue to trouble local and regional leaders alike in 2020. Davey may well emphasize his position that a dedicated resilience leader within Village staff would ease the way.

He is also due to discuss the challenge of access to the Rickenbacker Causeway during special events and emergency scenarios such as the tragic accident last month. The topic stirs great feeling among residents, who will no doubt look for solutions in Davey’s speech.

After the politics will come the praise, as Davey plans to focus on the many volunteers that make organizations, events and societies tick on Key Biscayne.

The exact contents of the Volunteer Appreciation Ceremony are somewhat unclear, but at the last Council meeting officials discussed congratulating and publicly thanking groups such as the Fourth of July Parade committee and other local interest and community clubs.

Finally, proceedings are due to wrap up in a reception with refreshments in the foyer immediately afterwards, offering volunteers, staff and officials the chance to enjoy a festive mingle with residents. All are welcome to attend.
